Bonnie was not born at the pack station, but has spent her whole life here. She was bought by former pack station owner Dennis Lonergan as a baby. We don't know the back story, but she was bottle fed. It is said that this is why she is so friendly, but also why she is so pushy. She will follow instructions, but one has to be very firm and show her you mean business. Bonnie is very big and she knows exactly how strong she is.
Bonnie is also very smart. One would imagine that with a head as large as hers, she must also have a big brain. She has to be double hitched because she can untie a regular knot. She knows how to let herself out of a stall if she is not pleased with her food, and can let herself into another stall to steal someone else's meal. If she is given half a chance on a pack, she will untie herself and walk away to find something to snack on. But when she is found out and scolded, she knows to get back in line.
That being said, she was a very good packer in her day. She could carry 180 lbs, 60 lbs more that the average donkey, and would tolerate all sorts of awkward loads. Bonnie is mostly retired now because she is getting old, she has seen a lot of work, she has given birth three times, her back is saggy, and her bones are creaky. In spite of all that she is quite healthy and will probably be with us for years to come.
