Marjorie is our lucky little goat, and we're lucky to have her. She was the only one of three babies Laverne had that survived the birth. Laverne almost didn't make it as well and as a result of all the medication flowing through mama, Marjorie had to be bottle fed.
Sue put her mothering instincts into high gear and took on all the responsibilities of raising young Marjorie. This meant going to the market on a regular basis to buy quarts of goat's milk and feeding her every couple of hours. Marjorie quickly learned to associate the beep of a microwave oven with a warm bottle of milk. For the first two weeks Marjorie lived in the house with Sue and Zack (the Dalmation) and Sue figured out how to fit her with diapers. The baby goat would sit on the couch between her housemates and Zack didn't seem to mind a bit.
When Laverne finished with the medication and Marjorie was old enough to return to the herd we did not expect Laverne to recognize her baby, not having bonded. But Laverne knew that she was her offspring and she cuddled and slept with her, and still does to this day.
The result of Marjorie having grown up in the house is that she is very friendly and comfortable around people. She learned to follow at only two weeks and she is now the leader of the herd when they are out of the corral. She knows her name and responds when called. On the down side, she still thinks she can sit in one's lap and she will try to nuzzle, only now she is heavy with sharp hooves, and has good sized horns
